As a child. I liked drawing people’s faces and was amazed at how newspaper cartoonists could capture the features of a politician, often mercilessly, with so few strokes of a pen. I liked the comical aspect of cartooning and often added jokes or funny titles. My mother was an artist who liked to paint landscapes of old farmhouses that told a story of people that lived there many years ago.
Although I initially pursued a career in electronics, I was fascinated by magic and theatre. In 1981 I took a year long trip to America and at every opportunity went to magic shows in New York, Las Vegas and the famous Magic Castle in Hollywood, an exclusive club only for magicians and their guests.
While in L.A., I went to Disneyland where, in a Main St. shop, I had my silhouette done. I stood and watched for about an hour as the artist speedily cut silhouettes of boys and girls with hats and glasses. I had never seen this done before and instantly realised I was watching something truly magical.
After returning to Australia, my mother tried to kindle my interest in oil painting. However, inspired by what I had seen in Disneyland, I determined to teach myself the art of silhouette cutting. A few months and several garbage bags of paper later, I had the basics mastered and over the next few years went on to perfect things like hairstyles, glasses, hats, moustaches, collars, ties etc.
Moving to Sydney I joined The International Brotherhood of Magicians and am now a member of The Order of Merlin granted to members of 25 years standing. I started a performing career as a clown, magician and character actor through my agent, Bruce English of Boulevarde Performance Pty. Ltd. with whom I still work today. I have worked aboard cruise ships, The Pacific Princess, The Coral Princess and The Achille Lauro in the East and the Pacific as a clown, magician and silhouette artist.
I have done numerous weddings and parties over the years and many corporate events from boardroom lunches, to huge international conventions.
These are some of the characters I have had fun performing.
